Resource: Alternatives to Calling the Police
If you find yourself experiencing a mental health crisis but are uncertain about calling 911, I invite you to check out the resource https://dontcallthepolice.com/austin/. It’s important to have informed consent with utilization of 988, knowing that police involvement could be a possibility if there’s imminent danger to yourself or others. 988 can be a great resource if this does not otherwise deter you. While the federal government has discontinued its funding and availability of the LGBTQIA+ branch of support on the 988 lifeline, options like the Trevor Project that operate independently are still there for you. These are trying times in the United States. More crisis hotline options are available HERE. Please be sure to look into each one to understand what lifeline or hotline is the best fit for your needs and your personal levels of comfort with police involvement. Please take care and reach out to your support systems, the lifelines you feel drawn to and safe with, and a therapist if you’re in need of ongoing support.
